Enhance your Diwali table- 5 tips for an easy home set up

Diwali is a celebration that is full of colour, light and love.

Its a time when we decorate the house, plan our outfits and buy gifts for loved ones but we often neglect our dinner tables. Food is a big thing for Diwali so it goes hand in hand that good food looks even better if you display it beautifully.

Whether you are having a sit down dinner or a buffet style gathering, dont worry we have some simple tablescape styling ideas to help you make this Diwali memorable.

1. Use a colourful Tablecloth/Runner/ Napkins

Try to make the base a solid one colour fabric cloth, if you dont have colour you can use white or natural linen or even buy a nice disposable one and add colour in your runner or accessories. Supermarkets are usually a good place to find coloured disposable cloths as this is a great alternative option (Bonus: less washing afterwards).

For your table runner try using an old indian sari draped down the middle of the table. This will add colour and make the table look authentic.

For Napkins you can also use colourful disposable napkins as we all know indian food can be messy and oil stains can be difficult to get out (trust me I know!!).

In terms of colours, pick out 1 or 2 colours in your sari runner and use napkins in these colours to complement the fabrics.

2. Use fresh colourful flowers

You dont have to pick up expensive flowers, just choose colours to complement but contrast against your runner to make them have impact.

For example if your sari runner is mostly blue and yellow, choose pink, white & orange flowers for contrast and effect.

Even simple roses & carnations will work. You can even forage flowers and foliage from your garden if you have anything left in bloom. just snip them at a 45 degree angle and place in water straight away with enough of a stem to fit in your vases.

You can place the flowers in a selection of bud vases across the length of your table. If you dont have bud vases then you can always use empty jam jars (remove the labels, leave them clear or spray paint them gold- why not do a fun actvity and paint diwali designs on them), empty candle vessels or other items you may have in your home. Basically you can use anything with a small neck and that can hold water for the fresh flowers.

3. Spice up your napkins

Even if you are using disposable napkins, try making your own napkin rings/ties using coloured or decorative ribbon or strips of sari fabric (if you dont mind cutting it up!)

These little details will make all the difference. If you have old beaded costume jewellery why not try breaking these up, and get creative and make yourself some napkin rings for a a bit of extra glam.

You can hand write some name places for a personal touch onto pretty card and even place some garden foliage to add little accents within your tied ribbon

4. Dont be afraid to mix & match your dinnerware...

But try and go for complementary colours or use simple white ones. The coloured napkins on the plates will add the needed colour. Even better if you have thalis (indian metallic plates) why not use those.

5. Bring light to the table

Diwali is a festival of light, so lots of candles, tealights and diyas will be the final finishing touch to your table that will give the most impact. If you can find coloured candles to complement that will be great, but any candles will work. If you dont have candle holders, try using small decorative bowls with tealights in, or even small glass bottles (like wine or sauce bottles- again you can spray paint these) with a neck that will hold a candlestick.

You can also buy so many beautifully decorated candle votives on places like Etsy.

If you want some extra sparkle try using fairy lights weaved in and around your bud vases.
